Zebra Cake Recipe

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids? Baking a cake can be a very rewarding activity. The recipe is easy to make and fun is guaranteed creating your unique “Zebra” pattern. In the end your efforts will be rewarded with a very delicious cake.

All you need is:

  • 5 separated eggs
  • 250g sugar
  • 10g vanilla sugar
  • 250ml oil (Sunflower oil or Canola oil)
  • 125ml tepid water
  • 375g flour
  • 17 g baking powder
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, fan forced 160, gas 3. Separate the eggs. Beat egg yolks, sugar and vanilla sugar until fluffy and light in colour. Add tepid water and oil. Mix flour and baking powder and add gently to the dough. Finally whisk the egg whites until stiff.

In order to get the zebra look, you separate the dough into two parts. Then add the cacao powder to one half. If the dough is not runny enough, simply add two more tbsp of water. Grease your cake pan (24cm) with some margarine or butter so that the dough can go in. Start by placing 3 tbsp of dark dough into the middle of your baking pan. On top, pour 3 tbsp of light dough. Continue using dark and light dough alternately until no dough is left – this is how you get your unique “zebra” pattern.

Bake the Zebra cake for 50-60 minutes. You know it is ready when you put a toothpick into the middle of the cake and no dough sticks to it. Let the cake cool down first before removing the baking pan. Decorate with chocolate ganache and seasonal strawberries.

Serve and enjoy!
